In the motoring industry, there is no accolade greater than that of a Car of the season award. Not only does this achievement shine the spotlight with an individual vehicle, but certainly also around the brand as a whole. Hyundai can easily verify this, having had five of their vehicles named finalists since 2010 and successfully claiming the coveted SA Car of the season title this year.
The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the season competition launched nearly Thirty years ago in 1986 and has evolved since to include a complex and fair judging process to maintain industry's development in product offerings. At the annual event, a panel of pros assesses everything from good value, aesthetics, safety, dynamics, technology, comfort, handling innovation and ingenuity before electing a success.
With the evolution of the brand's image not too long ago and also the introduction of their new Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy Hyundai has built itself like a strong market contender respected by critics and also the competition alike. The brand has stuck to its value-for-money promise and has been named a SAGMJ Car of the Year finalist no less than five times in the last couple of years:
          2010 - Hyundai i20 1.6 GLS
          2011 - Hyundai Sonata 2.4 GLS Exec
          2011 - Hyundai ix35 2.0 CRD GLS AWD AT
2012 - Hyundai Elantra 1.8 GLS (Overall Winner)
          2013 - Hyundai i30 1.8 Executive
Following on the controversial tie for the award in 2011, the Hyundai Elantra 1.8 GLS had become the Korean brand's first vehicle to clinch the coveted award with a landslide victory of 230 points when compared to 155 points of its runner-up in 2012. But it's not just on local soil that the Elantra won over the critics, the sexy sedan was also named United states and Canadian Car of the Year this year.
The 2013 SA Car of the Year finalists were recently announced and again Hyundai made it to the list. The Hyundai i30 1.8 Executive was named certainly one of this year's twelve finalists and it is set to compete against bakkies, sports cars, sedans, hatches and crossovers. Final judging will require place over two days in February in the well-known Gerotek testing facility outside of Pretoria, and the winner is going to be announced in a gala function in March. Will Hyundai achieve top honours once more? There is really a 1 in 12 chance.
